Van Sickle meets with media

In addition to one-on-one TV interviews and a candid sit-down with local sports talk radio station WSSP 1250 AM (Peaches???), Mike Van Sickle held two press conferences Wednesday following the Pro-Am at the U.S. Bank Championship.

A video of Van Sickle's second press conference of the afternoon is available on Marquette's YouTube channel. As for his round in the Pro-Am? He shot a 63, but the PGA made him play from the white tees.

A complete transcript (download PDF) of Mike's press conference earlier in the day is also available for download.

Van Sickle named to USA Palmer Cup team

Marquette University senior Mike Van Sickle was one of eight individuals selected to play for the United States in the 2009 Palmer Cup, a match-play Ryder Cup-style competition between the best college golfers from the United States and Europe.

Selections were announced Thursday on Golfweek.com
by Dustin Roberts of the Golf Coaches Association of America. Named after legendary golfer Arnold Palmer (who is scheduled to attend the event), this year's Palmer Cup will be held June 3-5 at Cherry Hills Country Club in Cherry Hills Village, Colo.

“I'm very excited about this opportunity,” said Van Sickle. “I was really hoping that I would make the team and it became a goal of mine at the beginning of the season. This is one of those tangible rewards for all off the hard work and time you put in behind the scenes. My play this last year has improved across the board, and to accomplish that goal is very gratifying. It seems like it's going to be really strong field.”

VIDEO: Lance Allan (WTMJ-TV4) sits down with Marquette's All-American

Lance Allan of WTMJ-TV4 took a break from his hobby as a professional wrestler (an inside joke) to step into the ring with Marquette's own Mike Van Sickle.

The interview was shot at the Golden Eagles' indoor practice facility located in the lower level of Marquette Gym.

The camera guy knew Mike's parents, so they had a good time chatting. If you didn't know the background, Mike's dad, Gary, spent a number of years as a newspaper writer in Milwaukee, while his mother, Betsy, was the Sports Information Director at Marquette before Mike was born.
